July 8, 1776:  Liberty Bell Tolls to Announce Declaration of Independence On this day in 1776, the 2,000-pound Liberty Bell rang out to summon the citizens of Philadelphia to the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence.  The Declaration had been adopted by Congress four days prior (on July 4th, which became known as Independence Day) but was not announced until it returned from the printer on July 8th.
