July 9, 1947: Then-Princess Elizabeth and Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh, Engaged
On this day in 1947, the engagement of Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II) and Philip Mountbatten was officially announced.  She was reported to have fallen in love with Philip on their third meeting in July 1939 when she was 13 years old, and they began to exchange letters.  They married on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey.
