October 28, 1886: Statue of Liberty Is Dedicated
On this day in 1886, the Statue of Liberty was dedicated in New York Harbor by President Grover Cleveland. The statue was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. The Statue of Liberty, originally known as “Liberty Enlightening the World,” was proposed as a commemoration of the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution.
The Statue of Liberty is located on Liberty Island, originally named Bedloe’s Island. The island is adjacent to Ellis Island, the chief entry station for immigrants to the United States. This ideal location has allowed the Statue of Liberty to welcome more than 12 million immigrants into New York Harbor by the sight of “Lady Liberty.”
Explore this Ken Burns’s The Statue of Liberty timeline, which details the progression of the statue from idea to reality.
