August 11, 1921:  African-American Writer Alex Haley Born
On this day in 1921, the author of Roots: The Saga of an American Family was born in Ithaca, New York.  Alex Haley’s novel inspired the Emmy Award-winning 1977 television series, Roots, starring LeVar Burton as Kunta Kinte.
Alex Haley is also known for his co-authorship of The Autobiography of Malcolm X, a memoir based on a series of interviews he conducted with human rights activist Malcolm X.
