August 3, 1492:  Columbus Sails the Ocean Blue
On this day in 1492, explorer and navigator Christopher Columbus embarked on his first of four voyages to the “New World” of the Americas (or what he believed to be Asia) with three ships: the Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Santa Clara – nicknamed the Niña.
After crossing the ocean, Columbus and his crew’s first stop was an island, which he named San Salvador, in what is now the Bahamas.
Columbus’s arrival in the Americas signified the joining of two worlds that for thousands of years had been developing completely independent of one another.
This timeline makes a side-by-side comparison of the “New World” of the western hemisphere and the “Old World” of the east.
