July 27, 1976:  John Lennon Receives United States Green Card
On this day in 1976, former Beatles musician John Lennon received his Green Card which allowed him to remain in the United States.  Then-President Richard Nixon, in an attempt to stifle the anti-Vietnam War movement that Lennon vehemently supported, began proceedings to have Lennon deported.  After the Watergate incident came to light, costing Nixon his presidency, Lennon’s deportation was overturned in October of 1975 and he received his Green Card on July 27 of the following year.
Watch an excerpt from American Masters’s John Lennon documentary “LENNONYC” containing footage from 1980 of John Lennon and Yoko Ono walking in Central Park while Lennon talks about how living in New York City has helped him find personal freedom.
