July 14, 1912:  Folk Musician Woody Guthrie Born
On this day in 1912, American singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie was born in a small town in Oklahoma.  In the agricultural ruin of the 1930’s, a period known as the Dust Bowl era, Guthrie joined thousands of “Okies” who migrated to California looking for work.  The harsh conditions faced by these working class people inspired many of his greatest songs.
In celebration of the Centennial of Guthrie’s birthday, PBS is releasing a new two-part Ken Burns documentary series on November 18 and 19, The Dust Bowl, that chronicles the catastrophe that destroyed the farmlands of the Great Plains.  Mark your calendars and in the meantime, check out clips of the series – including this one featuring Woody Guthrie singing “The Great Dust Storm”!
