July 12, 1817:  American Author and Philosopher Henry David Thoreau Born
On this day in 1817, Henry David Thoreau was born in Concord, Massachusetts.  Thoreau was an abolitionist and a known transcendentalist, best known for his book Walden, a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings.  He spent two years in a cabin in the woods of Walden Pond, where he hoped to embark on a spiritual and introspective journey of discovery by separating himself from society.
This social experiment serves as an inspiration for many, including author of “Cabin Fever: A Suburban Father’s Search for the Wild”, Tom Montgomery Fate.
