July 10, 1925:  The Scopes “Monkey Trial” Begins On this day in 1925 in Tennessee, high school science teacher John Thomas Scopes was put on trial for allegedly teaching evolution, which violated a Tennessee state law.  The Scopes Trial, nicknamed “Monkey Trial,” spurred the debate over whether to teach Creation or Evolution in the classroom.  In the end, John Scopes was found guilty, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality.
