APRIL 17, 1961: Bay of Pigs Invasion
Fifty-one years ago today, the infamous Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba was launched. Its mission: to overthrow Fidel Castro. The plan failed terribly and was an embarrassment to the the new Kennedy administration.
This segment from American Experience’s “The Kennedys” shows what steps President Kennedy took to recover from the Bay of Pigs, including relying more heavily on his brother Robert for advice.

Last year, on the fiftieth anniversary, Need to Know’s Jon Meacham offered a comparison between President Kennedy’s mistakes during the Bay of Pigs and the difficulties President Obama faces in the current political climate. Watch it here.
