MARCH 12, 1947: TRUMAN DOCTRINE ESTABLISHEDSixty-five years ago today, President Harry Truman presented a policy to combat communism in Greece and Turkey. By 1947, communism had spread throughout Eastern Europe. Truman gained support for the doctrine (which included $400 million in aid) by scaring the American people about the communist threat. Sixty-five years ago today, President Harry Truman presented a policy to combat communism in Greece and Turkey.

By 1947, communism had spread throughout Eastern Europe. Truman gained support for the doctrine (which included $400 million in aid) by scaring the American people about the communist threat.
