U.S. BATTLESHIP MAINE EXPLODES IN CUBA, LEADING TO SPANISH - AMERICAN WAR
On this day in 1898, the U.S. battleship Maine blew up in Spain-controlled Havana Harbor under shadowy circumstances. Sensational newspaper headlines contributed to anger at home, and the Spanish-American War was soon underway.
